There are always two types of Fear, useful fears, and useless fears.
Which ones do you frequently have?
We all know useful fears. These are fears of any form of imminent threat or danger that is real. It actually exists. If a dog snarls at you, you have good reason to feel fear. If your child walks close to a terrace edge you could have reason to worry.
On the other hand, some of us engage in imaginary fears. Fears that arise without any realistic threat or danger to loved ones or ourselves. All phobias’ came into this category. General anxiety disorder is when we have no idea why we feel anxious. Sometimes we fear that we may get a panic attack. Some of us fear that other people will always judge or criticize us. Or we obsess about getting contaminated. Sometimes it feels almost as though our minds are just searching for something to agonize about.
The first step in combating unreal useless fears is to become aware and acknowledge a fear of being useless if it truly is. To learn to realistically distinguish and differentiate between a Real cause of Fear and an Unreal one, a useful fear and a useless fear.
